Quick-Hit Notes: Charleston Southern

Here are some quick-hit notes following Liberty’s 20-19 season finale loss against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers: Ouch. Liberty closes out their final season at the FCS level with a heartbreaking loss to the Bucs thanks to a 42-yard field goal by CSU in the closing seconds of the game. The game started out with a pair of punts traded by both teams. In his third possession of the game, Buckshot was pressured, leading to an INT on an ill-advised heave down the field into traffic. On Saturday, Liberty hosted Presbyterian in what would be their final game as an FCS squad at Williams Stadium. It was an offensive fanfare for the Flames as they amassed 628 total yards, including 317 on the ground, both of which were season highs. Defensively Liberty continued to struggle. It has been a disappointing month for the Flames as they dropped four straight games to the likes of FCS powerhouse Jacksonville State, defensively skilled Saint Francis, and conference foes Kennesaw State and Monmouth. Liberty fans are all too familiar with the Flames picking up major wins while dropping games that seem like easy wins. But considering the way the season is playing out, Liberty is losing to the good teams (combined record of 26-6) while beating the bad (combined record of 4-29). In any manner, there is no doubt this team has not lived up to its potential. Now, they...

Weekly MVP Awards: Indiana State

After a slow start for the Flames, they found themselves in another offensive shootout against MVFC member Indiana State. There was speculation that this game would be too close for comfort considering the Sycamores come from a stout conference who have 3 teams in the FCS Top 10. This battle-tested team, who rely heavily on the run game, found success through the air and had victory in their sights with the aid of Liberty’s sideline. They were sorely disappointed when Liberty’s special teams came through and blocked their way to 3-0. Offense Co-MVPs: QB Buckshot Calvert Buckshot continues his impressive sophomore outing as...
