FIELD HOCKEY

There is much excitement around the Lady Flames and their move to the Big East. Though they have struggled with their opening slate of non-conference games (against no. 19 JMU, no. 4 Duke, no. 2 Syracuse, and no. 11 Virginia), Liberty won their first Big East conference game against Villanova 1-0.

Liberty plays their first home conference game today, September 23rd against Quinnipiac, at 4:00pm.

They also have two away games next week:
September 25th, William & Mary @ 1:00pm
September 30th, Old Dominion @ 5:00pm (conference game)

THE REDSPIN PODCAST

A Sea of Red announced the addition of a new weekly podcast this week. The ‘Redspin‘ podcast will feature games, events, and weekly guest from Flames Nation. The first episode features Liberty fullback Thomas Kennedy and punter Trey Turner, along with former Flames beat-writer Chris Lang.

LIBERTY TO FBS?

The FBS rumor mill has started spinning again. Earlier this week Liberty president Jerry Falwell Jr. announced that it could be just a matter of “months” before Liberty football makes the jump from FCS to FBS. Are there legitimate talks going on with FBS conferences? Or is Falwell hoping the pieces fall into place for the Flames to find a hole with all the movement going on at the FBS level? Or is it nothing?

We will find out.

FOOTBALL

Liberty kept it close for the majority of the game against FBS foe SMU on Saturday. The score was 14-19 going into the 4th quarter, but like the majority of the game, the offense couldn’t quite click. Liberty lost 14-29.

The team announced that starting LG Michael Henderman is out for the season due to a back injury.

It’s a big weekend for Flames football as Jacksonville State comes to Williams Stadium. Jacksonville State, located in Jacksonville, Alabama, was the runner up in the 2015 FCS championship game against North Dakota State. The Gamecocks come into this game ranked as the #3 team in the FCS, tied with the highest ranking team to ever visit Lynchburg (Appalachian State, 1999).

All eyes are on the QB situation at the moment though. Things aren’t as set-in-stone between Stephon Masha and Buckshot Calvert as they were at the beginning of the season. A starter for the JSU game has yet to be named.

Due to injuries in the SMU game, RB Todd Macon and DB Chris Turner are questionable for this weekend. DB Jeremy Peters looks to play.

The game against JSU is September 24th. Kickoff is at 7:00pm.
