We don’t discuss politics much, if at all, but when it meshes with Liberty athletics and its quest for FBS membership, its worth a mention. I’m sure you are all aware of Texas Senator Ted Cruz announcing he is running for president at Liberty on Monday. Well, Yahoo reveals that Cruz’ aides lobbied for Liberty’s inclusion in FBS.

Jerry Fallwell Jr. said on Monday that “associates of Sen. Ted Cruz lobbied university presidents on behalf of his schools attempt to join a new athletic conference.” Falwell further explained to Yahoo, “They helped us. Liberty’s trying to move into one of the top athletic conferences, and they did a little lobbying help for us on that, talking to college presidents.”

Falwell and Liberty general counsel David Corry refrained to mention what specific conference Cruz’ supporters lobbied for Liberty to gain admittance, but clearly it was the Sun Belt. Texas State and the University of Texas at Arlington are the two members of the Sun Belt that hail from Cruz’ state of Texas.
