As we venture deeper into spring, the days get longer, the weather gets warmer, and the excitement grows knowing another season of football inches closer. The sun was bright and the wind was strong today as the Flames continued their spring practices. There is much enthusiasm and excitement as the team prepares to defend their Big South title and seek a second appearance in the FCS playoffs.

There are a number of things to take away from practice today:

  1. Kendall Couamin still appears to be the go-to tight end.
-I believe all his snaps came with the first team today. His confidence appears to be growing, but his hands still need some work.
  2. The backfield situation couldn’t be any better.
-D.J. Abnar got the majority of the first teams snaps today, with Rice and Mosley carrying the rest. The running backs have also had quite a presence at the line with the wide receivers. There were numerous times they were sent in motion to the line. With the talent in the backfield, I imagine it is quite easy to try the guys out in other positionS.
  3.  Turner Gill made his presence known with special teams.
-Typically Coach Gill stands in the background and lets his assistants take the reigns. Today was another story though. He was very involved and vocal with kickoff and punt drills. Tyus White took the majority of the returns, followed by Zac Parker and Darrin Peterson. There were a total of six guys in the endzone returning kicks. It will be interesting to see who becomes the primary returner.
  4. There is still a lot of movement with the defense.
-It appears that veteran linebacker Nick Newman has found a counter part in Jimmy O’Grady as he was beside him for most of the first team reps. But aside from that, not much is set in stone yet. Alpha Jalloh and Tyus White, who is a wide receiver on the roster, each had the two picks of the day and the defensive line held the run in check.
