Fogg calls the Richmond game a “red-letter” game

It’s easy to understand the Richmond/Liberty game this weekend means a lot to FlamesNation, but how much does it mean to Liberty’s players? Danny Rocco had a hand in recruiting all of Liberty’s players except for the true freshman class and a handful of Coach Gill’s first recruiting class in 2012 that are now sophomores/redshirt freshman. These are kids who spent countless hours working their tails off for Rocco, he leaves, and not even 2 years later they have to face him from the other side.

“I think it’s going to be awesome, it’s going to be a pretty emotional game for the guys who were coached under him,” explained cornerback Kevin Fogg. “Just being able to play against him, it’s going to be crazy.”

Liberty running back Des Rice played at Liberty Christian Academy under Danny’s brother, Frank, and then was recruited by and played for Danny at Liberty his freshman season. Rice agrees with Fogg, “everybody’s going to be pretty amped up” for the Richmond game. Fogg went further, “Its definitely going to be a good game, I’m looking forward to it. It’s my red letter game for the season.”

Call it a “red letter game” or whatever you want, bottom line is the players want to win the game. Nick Sigmon: “I know a lot of people are looking at it as we want to go out there and beat our old coaches, but we know we need to play our best to beat Richmond because they’re a good team. It’s not us going to play their coaches, it’s us trying to get together and be the best team we can because we know Richmond is going to come out with some fire.”

Most of Liberty’s players were recruited by and have great respect for Richmond head coach Danny Rocco, but they still wear “Liberty” on their chest while Rocco wears “Richmond” on his. Saturday he’s the enemy, and the Flames desperately want to beat their former coach. “I’m looking forward to it, looking for a win for one, but definitely looking forward to shaking his hand.” Fogg continued, “He brought me in here so I have to show him respect, but also I want the win.”
