Liberty moves to 4-0 in Big South play with a win over Presbyterian, 16-0. Here are our quick hit notes:

  • It was a sluggish afternoon with turnovers, bad snaps, missed extra points, penalties, and not much offense. Fortunately, the Flames were able to outlast the Blue Hose and wear them down on the road.
  • Carrington Mosley put together his 2nd consecutive career game, finishing with a career high in rushing yards. Mosley went over the 100 yard rushing mark for the first time in his career, he finished with 17 rushes for 137 yards.
  • Buckshot Calvert had his worst performance since taking over as starting quarterback several weeks ago. He finished the game 5/15 for 51 yards and 1 interception. However, Calvert and the team continues to find a way win, as the Flames are now 5-0 with Buckshot as the starting quarterback. It’s Liberty’s first 5 game winning streak since the 2013 season.
  • With the win, Liberty moves to 4-0 in Big South play, its first 4-0 start in conference play since 2011.
  • The teams combined for 12 penalties on the afternoon, and had more penalties than combined points until Liberty tacked on a touchdown with 5 minutes left in the game.
  • “You want to be remembered in November” is one of Coach Gill’s frequent sayings to his team. Under Gill, the Flames are now 14-2 in the month of November.
  • The Flames move to 6-3 on the season, and clinch the program’s 11th straight winning season. Liberty is one of just 5 FCS teams with active streaks of 11 or more winning seasons.
  • For the 3rd time this season, Liberty held its opponent to less than 20 points. The Flames are 3-0 this season when accomplishing the feat, with wins over Jacksonville, Robert Morris, and Presbyterian. Liberty improves to 20-1 under Gill when holding opponents to fewer than 20 points.
  • The defense had a dominating performance, holding Presbyterian to 175 total yards. The shutout was Liberty’s first 2014, and its the first shutout of a conference opponent on the road since 2013.
  • With a win next week over Charleston Southern, the Flames win clinch the Big South’s auto-bid to the FCS playoffs. The Buccaneers entered the day 2-0 in Big South play and ranked in the top 10. However, CSU was upset at home by Gardner-Webb, 17-10. Liberty will still need to beat CSU to assure itself of the Big South auto-bid, but there’s still a chance they could back their way into winning a tiebreaker if they lose to the Bucs. If Charleston Southern beats Liberty and loses to Kennesaw State the following week, the Flames will end the season tied at 4-1 with Kennesaw State while CSU would be 3-2. Liberty would win the tiebreaker over the Owls due to the head-to-head win.
