UPDATE: According to sources, we have been able to confirm that “Richardson is confirmed (to Liberty), but he does have academic issues.” No further word at the present time regarding his academic issues.

Previous report: Yesterday word broke that former Virginia and Alabama quarterback Phillip Sims, is strongly considering the Flames. Well, another rumor is spreading as well.

Clifton Richardson is headed to Liberty… Crazy
— Andrew Coleman (@AColeUVa34) June 1, 2013

It was announced on May 16 that Virginia running back Clifton Richardson had decided to transfer. Richardson was a four-star recruit out of Menchville High School in Newport News, Virginia. He has two years of eligibility remaining, and would be able to play immediately for the Flames. Richardson rushed 92 times for 425 yards and 2 touchdowns during his two-year Virginia career.

Virginia head football coach Mike London issued a statement announcing Richardson’s desire to transfer: “Clifton Richardson  has been granted permission to seek a release from his scholarship to pursue opportunities elsewhere. Clifton will be leaving the University in good academic standing. I wish the best for Clifton as he pursues his academic and athletic goals.”

We have been able to confirm this rumor has legs, but we have not been able to confirm Richardson to Liberty is 100%, at this moment.

If Liberty is able to snag Richardson, it would help alleviate the loss of suspended running back Aldreakis Allen.
