Our initial request was made on Monday, April 1, and was sent to Mr. Donald Egle and Mr. Jack Knight at James Madison University. We requested “all correspondence, emails, faxes, messages, or letters” specifically relating to JMU and the Sun Belt Conference and other specific parties.

Our time frame was any correspondence from late November 2012 through April 1, 2013. In total, there were more than 20 names from JMU, the Sun Belt, Conference USA, Liberty University and Old Dominion University included in our FOIA request.

We were initially responded to in less than 24 hours by Ms. Susan Wheeler, University Counsel at JMU. We exchanged a number of e-mails with her over the next several days. On April 9, Ms. Wheeler responded to our request, some of which we have shared.

To be honest, the lack of information sent to us was shocking. Not sure if this is because there really is not much interest on JMU’s side, or if they are communicating with the Sun Belt in ways which are not traceable via FOIA requests.
