Here’s our updated Big South Basketball Power Rankings with games played through February 9th.

Note: National rankings are courtesy of KenPom.com. Arrows denote movement in power rankings since last week.

1. Coastal Carolina 17-7, 8-4 #152

  6

Drop 4 spots one week, jump 6 the next. Such is life in the Big South Conference this season where there were 7 teams tied for first place at 8-4 over the weekend. The Chanticleers appear to have righted the ship with wins over Asheville and High Point this week.

2. Charleston Southern 14-9, 8-4 #209

  1

The Buccaneers were the team to put an end to Radford’s 8 game win streak, and it came just a couple nights after losing to Winthrop by 22. Go figure. Saah Nimley scored 39 points and dished out 8 assists to lead CSU over Radford as he continues to stake his claim as the Big South Player of the Year.

3. Radford 17-8, 8-4 #164

  1

It had to end at some point, but it was an impressive streak. 8 straight wins in a competitive league such as this is no small feat. 4 of the Highlanders wins during the streak came on the road, and they swept the season series with High Point. How will they rebound after their first loss since the first week of January? I’m sure Radford is glad they face Longwood and Presbyterian this week.

4. High Point 17-7, 8-4 #140

  3

The Panthers are on their first 2 game losing streak of the season after falling to both Radford and Coastal this week. Things won’t get any easier for High Point as they host Winthrop on Wednesday. Oh, and did you see John Brown’s dunk on Friday night against Coastal? Wow.

5. Winthrop 13-10, 8-4 #182

  1

With Radford’s 8 game win streak coming to an end, the Eagles may be the hottest team in the conference right now. Pat Kelsey’s bunch has won 5 out of their last 6 games, with the only loss coming on the road against the Highlanders. And you’re asking how they drop 1 spot in the power rankings? To be honest, I don’t know either.

6. UNC-Asheville 13-11, 9-4 #211

   no change

Asheville went 2-1 on the week with wins over Longwood and Gardner-Webb and a loss to Coastal Carolina. The Bulldogs play host to Presbyterian on Thursday.

7. Gardner-Webb 16-10, 8-5 #200

  2

Jerome Hill deserves a look at Big South Player of the Year. The junior forward is averaging 19 points and 10 rebounds per game. He went for 24 points and 20 boards against Campbell this week, and has 13 double-doubles on the season.

8. Presbyterian 8-17, 4-8 #338

   no change

As competitive as the top of the league is, it’s just as uncompetitive at the bottom. The Blue Hose have taken care of business against the bottom of the league, going 4-2 against Campbell, Longwood, and Liberty. Will they be able to knock off one of the top 7 teams in the league? Those are the only teams left on their schedule.

9. Longwood 7-18, 3-9 #315

   no change

The Lancers are more competitive this season, losing many conference games by single digits, but they just haven’t been able to get over the hump under 2nd year head coach Jayson Gee. Two tough games this week against Radford and Charleston Southern.

10. Campbell 9-16, 3-9 #259

   no change

Campbell lost an opportunity to get a leg up on their bottom-of-the-league mates as they fell to Gardner-Webb in overtime. If they could have gotten the win, the Camels would have swept the Runnin’ Bulldogs on the season. A chance to pick up their first conference road win on Tuesday at Liberty.

11. Liberty 6-19, 0-12 #340

   no change

Even without leading scorer Jordan Downing, Presbyterian was able to knockoff Liberty. The Flames are one of just 4 teams that remain winless in conference play this season. The other winless teams in conference play are Grambling State, Florida A&M, and San Jose State.
