Liberty opens up its season this week with a 3 game series in Columbia, South Carolina against the South Carolina Gamecocks.

If Liberty wants to make it to the NCAA tournament this year there is no better way to begin their season than with wins against the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. The Gamecocks have been the class of college baseball last three years, making it to the College World Series each season and winning it twice.

In preseason rankings, South Carolina is ranked No. 7 according to Baseball America. The Gamecocks are led by four Preseason All-Americans – sophomore catcher Grayson Greiner, senior left-handed pitcher Tyler Webb, senior right-handed pitcher Colby Holmes and sophomore left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery.

South Carolina enters in this season with a new head coach, Chad Holbrook. Holbrook was named the head coach in July 2012 and previously served as associate head coach and recruiter for the Gamecocks.

Liberty’s head coach, Jim Toman, served on South Carolina’s coaching staff for 11 seasons, starting in 1996.  While on the Gamecocks’ staff, Toman was named the 2002 Recruiter of the Year among assistant coaches.
