Darrin Peterson looks to lead an established group of receivers in 2014

We continue our countdown of the top 10 storylines entering the 2014 season as we discuss just how good can Liberty’s offense be this season?

In contrast to last year’s team, the 2014 version of Liberty football will be led by their offense. The Flames return 4 starters on the offensive line including all-conference performers Jonathan Burgess, Mitch Hanson, and Greg Ray. The receiving corps is stacked with returnees Darrin Peterson, Gabe Henderson, and Dante Shells. Josh Woodrum is entering his 3rd season as the starting quarterback. If it wasn’t for the injury of Des Rice, the Flames would return their top contributors in every major offensive category from a season ago.

The 2013 version of Liberty’s offense wasn’t too shabby in its own right. The Flames ranked in the top 16 in the country in scoring offense, red zone offense, and 3rd down conversions. Liberty racked up over 400 yards of total offense per game. This was for an inexperienced group heading into the 2013 season. Remember questioning the wide receivers? Following a full season of game experience and working together, how good could they be this year?

Obviously, the biggest question surrounds the running back position. 2nd team all-conference performer from a year ago, Des Rice, will miss the season with a leg injury. Rice had a breakout season in 2013 rushing for 80 yards a game and 16 touchdowns. D.J. Abnar will be counted on to pick up the biggest portion of Rice’s load. Abnar rushed for over 400 yards and 6 touchdowns on just 72 carries a season ago.

How far will this team go? It may be dependent upon an experienced offense.
